The protagonists include Amanda De Almeida Rocha as the Snow Queen, Giulia Del Grande and Kaynan Pereira Oliveira as Gerda and Kay, Ania Bartkowski in the role of the Sorceress, Matea Milas as the Hajduk, and Josephine Mansfield and Danil Podhruško as the Princess and Prince.
Gerda and Kay enjoy their youthful love, but Kay becomes cold after encountering the magical Snow Queen, who abducts him. Determined in her search for Kay, Gerda meets the Sorceress and faces various obstacles, including bandits, yet never gives up on love. In the end, Gerda finds Kay in the Snow Queen's castle, and her tears and love break the spell. This is the plot of this new Croatian ballet, for which the music was composed by contemporary Croatian composer Davor Bobić.
Vladimir Ham, the director of HNK Osijek, emphasized at a press conference held in the atrium of HNK Split that without the participation of the soloists from the Split Ballet, the Osijek theatre would not have been able to premiere this ballet: "We do not have a formal ballet ensemble, we only have dancers who work with us on a freelance basis, some of whom are professionals and others ballet enthusiasts. Svebor Sečak beautifully united them, allowing us to premiere this ballet piece. Fortunately, director Bilandžić offered to create this grand ballet story together. I am glad that the Split ballet audience will now be able to see this ballet magic. With this project, the Consortium K-HNK has reached its full glory; this shows what the Ministry aims to achieve with additional funding for collaboration among national theatres." HNK Split director Vicko Bilandžić stated: "I am very happy and proud to be part of the creation of this new work that offers something novel on the stage of our national music and national ballet. The K-HNK consortium has already provided us with much good, and this is the essence, the best that this brilliant project brings us. Of course, this funding is supplemented by what we receive from our founder, the city of Split, without which none of this would be possible. I hope this will be the beginning of creating a ballet ensemble in Osijek, and it showed how significant this performance was for the city. Until then, we are ready to assist in that endeavor. We are preparing a new co-production for next autumn, to create the opera Nikola Šubić Zrinjski together with the Osijek theatre."
"The idea for this ballet originated while I was studying at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in the Soviet Union, where I had the privilege of being taught ballet writing by fantastic professors. It took about thirty years for that idea to come to fruition. It’s a beautiful story that emerged from some of my childhood imaginations. I believe that the ballet will touch the audience's emotions and, I hope, be brought to life on world stages. This is a kind of cross-section of my life's work, and I am very grateful to everyone who has realized it, especially Prof. Sečak, maestro Vuger, the directors of the two national theatres, the Split theatre ballet ensemble, and the orchestra. Everyone did an excellent job," said composer Davor Bobić.
Choreographer Svebor Sečak added: "I immediately recognized this music as something that suits me, partly due to its neoclassical approach that possesses a sense of tradition. The conventions of classical ballet are recognizable but in a contemporary way. In both music and on stage, we have stripped away the dusty remnants of the 19th century and have begun to build the classics further. I have always approached ballet in a way that develops it in line with contemporary tendencies. Classical, neoclassical, and modern influences do not exclude each other, but rather combine in a network that creates new perspectives. This is how I approached the choreography. Neoclassical elements running throughout the entire performance intertwine with ethno motifs, and I have occasionally used more modern movement to avoid pathos. The animations by Zdenko Bašić play a crucial role in transferring this fairytale to the 21st century, matching the understanding of today's young people. The scene changes are rapid, and what unfolds on the screen combines with the events on stage. Judging by the audience's reactions in Osijek, it was a complete success, and I am confident it will be the same in Split. I entrusted the roles of Gerda and Kay to young artists who have come from abroad, but children from two ballet studios also play significant roles. On stage, there will be 83 dancers, a live orchestra, and animations, making it truly a neoclassical spectacle for the 21st century."
Conductor, maestro Stjepan Vuger will lead the orchestra of the HNK Split Opera: "It was challenging to work with considering that this is a new score with which the orchestra is encountering for the first time. However, it is accessible music that is likely to appeal to the players, and I believe, the audience as well. The ability of composer Bobić, which is evident in this score, is to write an innocent, childlike melody, while at the same time skillfully handling a large, epic, symphonic gesture that is present in this ballet."
"The children from our Classical Ballet Department are eagerly awaiting the premiere, as are their schoolmates, all of whom are interested in seeing the performance, so I am confident that additional performances will have to be added to the repertoire," emphasized Vesna Alebić, director of the "Josip Hatze" Music School in Split.
The creative team of the production, in addition to composer Davor Bobić, choreographer Svebor Sečak, and conductor Stjepan Vuger, includes: set and costume designer Neven Mihić, lighting designer Tomislav Kobia, sound designer Petar Ivanišević, animation and video projection authors Zdenko Bašić and Franko Dujmić, ballet master Albina Rahmatullina, costume design assistant Antonija Bilonić, and production assistant Gorenka Žižić Jagar.
Following the premiere on November 12, the first repeat performance is scheduled for November 13.
