Zagreb Quartet represents an institution of classical music in Croatia - since their first concert on 25th April 1919, almost a hundred years, the first Croatian chamber ensemble has had some thirty members among them Josip Klima, Stjepan Šulek, Zlatko Balija, Đorđe Trkulj, Marija Cobenzl, Goran Bakrač, Josip Stojanović, Goran Končar… This long-lived ensemble played at thousands of concerts, some ten guest performances at eminent music addresses, recorded more that 60 records and received the multitude of domestic and foreign acknowledgements and awards, among them Vladimir Nazor Award for Life Achievement, awarded in the year 2009, is particularly outstanding as well as several “Porin Music Awards”.
In the early stages, the Quartet formed a wide musical repertoire, ranging from classical music such as Hayden, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms and so-called iron quartet repertoire, to contemporary composers with particular emphasis on Croatian composers. Works of Božidar Širola, Josip Štolcer Slavenski, Milko Kelemen, Marko Ruždjak, Frano Parać, Dubravko Detoni and numerous others were regularly included in their performances.
Members of today’s Zagreb Quartet are Marin Maras, first violin, Davor Philips, second violin, Hrvoje Philips, viola and Martin Jordan, violocello. These are amazing soloists playing remarkably together, thinking in unison and enjoying the music they are performing.
