Mani Gotovac dedicated her ninth book, a story about lifelong love, passion, desire, and farewells, to her second husband, Željko Senečić, a painter, set designer, writer, and director. Although the author often emphasized that it is a work of fiction where only some names are taken from reality, many recognized the characters Luz and Luva as a reflection of herself and Seneka and their story.
Director Anastasija Jankovska emphasizes that The Farewells is not a play about Mani Gotovac. "First of all, we are dealing with a novel, which is not her real life. The novel The Farewells is the basis. Elvis Bošnjak did the dramatization, but above all, it is a love story from Mani Gotovac's novel. In the novel, there are indeed connections to her life, but there is a lot of fiction. In short, the play is fiction based on real events. It is a story about two people whose love moves mountains. If there are high peaks, then there are also deep abysses. There must be balance. That's why Mani is interesting as a person. And that's why this love is not ordinary but the kind that breaks down everything in its path," says the director.
