Stjepan Gračan Retrospective 1970 - 2016

Retrospective exhibition in the Kula Gallery presents among the earliest works those created at the time of the formation of the Biafra Group in 1970 in which Stjepan Gračan together with Miro Vuco represented the founders and frontmen interpreting the attitudes and activities of the Group. In eight years of the existence of the Group, Gračan created some of the most powerful and most prominent sculptures of rebellious, revolted, socially engaged artistic awareness, materialized in extremely disturbing, massacred figures of lethal, extreme poetics of absolute expressionism. This sculptural expression of violent figuration Gračan did not abandon when Biafra Group broke up in 1978, but continued with the same tension and intensity in later years and decades to this day.

Stjepan Gračan was born in Prugovac in 1941. He studied History of Art and Psychology first but then decided to enter the Academy. He graduated Sculpture Study Programme at the Academy of Fine Arts, University of Zagreb in the class of Professor Antun Augustinčić. He is one of the founders of the Biafra Group. His work is characterised by emphasizing grotesque forms, expressing and enhancing the distortion of human figure for the more dramatic adoption of ideas and content itself. Commonly used material in his work is polyester which in combination with other materials is usually painted. He created many public sculptures and monuments such as the Vladimir Nazor Monument in Zagreb. He teaches at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb.
