With a typical romantic plot, the most exciting one in the entire classical ballet literature, Le Corsaire abounds with fragments that are often performed independently. Famous Le Corsaire pas de deux is certainly one among few most performed fragments in the world of classical ballet. Staging the entire Le Corsaire with so many big and demanding roles is the endeavor that no Croatian ballet company ever before has done.
Le Corsaire is a playful and lavish romantic ballet tale, filled with action and romantic, of fearless pirats, beautiful female slaves taking place in magnificent Ottoman palaces, lively Oriental bazaars, tropical islands. Fatal ship sinking storms, revenges, escapes, betrayal and love that triumphs at the end – all these are the elements of a rich plot. Loosely based on the 1814 poem The Corsair by Lord Byron, this classic ballet narrates the story of the passionate pirate Conrad who falls in love with the beautiful Medora. When Conrad and his pirates abduct Medora from a slave market to their secret grotto, the adventure is just about to begin... to be concluded by a victory of the sole invincible force that is Love.
