La Stravaganza / Noces

Angelin Preljocaj is a significant name on the global contemporary dance scene. In the first part ("La Stravaganza"), he explores the theme of immigration, where the past blends with the future, while the second part ("Noces") reexamines wedding rituals.

La Stravaganza / Noces

Angelin Preljocaj is a French dancer and choreographer of Albanian descent. He began his dance career as a classical dancer. He later continued his studies in contemporary dance with the French dancer and choreographer of German origin Karin Waehner in Paris and Merce Cunningham in New York. In 1984, he founded his company, Compagnie Preljocaj (later Ballet Preljocaj).

His creations have been showcased worldwide and incorporated into the repertoires of many companies, such as the New York City Ballet, Staatsoper in Berlin, and the Ballet de l'Opéra National de Paris. He has also directed short films and movies based on his choreography. He has received several awards, including the "Grand Prix National de la Danse" (1992), "Benois de la Danse" (1995), "Bessie Award" (1997), "Les Victoires de la musique" (1997), Crystal Globe (2009), and the Samuel H. Scripps Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the American Dance Festival (2014). His first feature-length film, "Polina, danser sa vie," directed by Valérie Müller and adapted from Bastien Vivès's comic book, was released in theaters in November 2016.

In April 2019, he was admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts in the newly opened choreography department. In the same year, he created "Winterreise" for Milan's La Scala, as well as "Soul Kitchen" with inmates from the Baumettes prison in Marseille, the result of four months of workshops held within the prison with five volunteers. The documentary film "Danser sa sente," directed by Valérie Müller, was released the same year and provides an intimate look at this creation in a prison environment. The film won the first prize at Fipadoc 2020.

After "Swan Lake" in 2020 and "Deleuze/Hendrix" in 2021, he choreographed and staged Lully's opera "Atys" for the Grand Théâtre de Genève in 2022. Simultaneously, he conceived a short choreography for "Danse Europe!" a participative project open to all. For Dior, he created choreography and the film "Roman Night" with dancers from the Roman Opera Ballet as part of International Dance Day. He also appears in the television series "Irma Vep" by Olivier Assayas, both as an actor and choreographer.
In July 2022, he presented his new creation, "Mythologies," for the dancers of Ballet Preljocaj and the Ballet de l'Opéra de Bordeaux, featuring original music by Thomas Bangalter.
