Eva and Danijel are a couple who want to have a child but are unsuccessful. Both are approaching their forties, which makes the likelihood of successful conception increasingly slim and at the same time, they are still struggling with financial stability. They decide to undergo clinical treatment for infertility, and the number 64 in the title refers to the number of hormonal injections Eva has to self-administer into the lower part of her abdomen. Yet even for this exhausting procedure, no one can guarantee it will succeed.

64, one of the latest dramatic texts by contemporary Croatian writer Tena Štivičić, is an urban drama with elements of humor that addresses a highly relevant issue increasingly present in Western society. Couples—most often due to financial reasons—are deciding to have their first child later and later, which leads to more frequent complications during pregnancy or even an inability to conceive. Infertility is also becoming more common among younger people. Statistics show that birth rates in Western society are declining, more and more couples fail to conceive naturally, and there are fewer and fewer children. Director Nina Šorak, also a dramaturge and author, belongs to the generation of women who face the dilemma of a child or career. This pressing question should not arise in our society, as the answer should, instead of ‘either–or,’ be decisive ‘both.’... Yet despite everything, this question keeps resurfacing for young women, who, on top of it all, often cannot even talk about it, as the topic is entangled both with patriarchal expectations and radical feminist solutions. We aim to support this topic in public discourse through an exceptionally sharp and socially critical performance.
