Libretto Workshop

The libretto workshop will begin with a brief theoretical presentation on the libretto as a literary form. Participants will be introduced to dramatic situations, characters and narration, and libretto composition in the first session. They will also receive examples of the relationship between verse and aria.

In the second session, excerpts from the librettos of three operas by Jakov Gotovac will be read and analyzed:

• Ero s onoga svijeta (Ero the Joker) – libretto by Milan Begović, based on a Croatian folk tale
• Mila Gojsalića – libretto by Danko Angjelinović, based on a Croatian legend
• Đerdan – libretto by Jakov Gotovac and Cvjetko Jakelić, inspired by motifs from the short stories Alkar and Đerdan by Dinko Šimunović

In the remaining sessions, participants will create their own librettos for a small musical-theatrical piece based on a selected Croatian folk song, story, or legend. This practical work will allow them to explore their creative potential with expert guidance and feedback.
