The Centuries of Croatian Literature (SHK) series was established in 1993 as a conceptual successor to the similarly envisioned literary series Five Centuries of Croatian Literature (1962–1995). However, SHK was created to revise the earlier selection, both in terms of authors and the extent of their inclusion, free from ideological and other constraints, and with enhanced bibliographic and other scholarly additions. The first volumes were published in the spring of 1995, and the complete series, planned to include more than 300 volumes, aims to encompass literary works from the earliest medieval monuments to contemporary literature.

The importance of the SHK series lies in its establishment of philologically reliable texts for the publication of the written heritage of the Croatian linguistic tradition. Alongside a developed textual methodology, the SHK series also aims to contribute to the overall Croatian literary scholarship in terms of literary history.
