The drama Summers with Marija, a stage adaptation of the novel by Olja Savičević Ivančević, premiered on Friday, January 24, performed by the Drama Ensemble of the Croatian National Theatre Split.
The play was directed by Marina Pejnović, with the novel adapted for the stage by Mila Pavićević. The cast featured Snježana Sinovčić Šiškov, Katarina Romac, Ana Marija Veselčić, Lucija Alfier, Zdeslav Čotić, Petra Kovačić Botić, Zorana Kačić Čatipović, Bruna Bebić, Monika Vuco Carev, Tajana Jovanović, Stipe Radoja, Nikša Arčanin, and Marjan Nejašmić Banić.
Summers with Marija explores the ever-relevant theme of women's societal roles through different generational perspectives. Set in a stone house in a Dalmatian town from 1921 to 2021, the play weaves a mosaic of stories and viewpoints around various Marijas (Maša, Mare, Meri). Together, these narratives create a rich picture of endurance, transformation, history-making, and the emotions of an extended family circle.
