A Somber Gaze into an Empty Wallet

A Somber Gaze into an Empty Wallet

A Somber Gaze into an Empty Wallet, an original project by Ivan Penović, will be performed on Saturday, July 6th, in the Courtyard of the Croatian National Theatre Split (Plinara) as the last premiere of the Split theatre season. The actors from HNK Split, Mijo Jurišić, Goran Marković, Donat Zeko, and Stipe Jelaska, play the roles of four musically challenged characters who form the band TPUPT, a project that turns into a successful endeavor for which the characters in this drama are minimally prepared.

The play's narrative follows the journey from the inception of the idea, through the formation of a fake band, to the concert that the characters must finally perform. TPUPT is an idea that spirals out of control quickly, gaining momentum faster than its participants are ready for. The possibility of creating false personalities, images, and success through social media transforms the idea of a garage band into a serious venture for which the characters in this drama are minimally prepared.

Director Ivan Penović states, "This is a play about a band. A band that emerges from a joke, as a fixed idea. Like an idea for one day. A band of four characters who each see something they want or dream about in it, but in any case, the band is not the best solution. This is a play about the band TPUPT, a band that has never achieved fame as far as you know, unless you're Chinese. A band that is famous exactly as much as it needs to be. This is a story about a band in a time when it's very difficult to tell stories because all adventures have remained in some past times. 'A Somber Gaze into an Empty Wallet' is a child's play. On the playground for grown-ups."

In addition to the director and text author Ivan Penović, the creative team of the play includes set designer Filip Triplat, costume designer Tina Vukasović Đaković, musical collaborator and composer Goran Cetinić-Koća, Branimir Bokan responsible for lighting design, and sound designer Tomislav Luetić.

Following the premiere on Saturday, July 6th, at 9 p.m., repeat performances are scheduled for July 8th and 9th, also at 9 p.m.
